The Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II Lens delivers very good image quality in a small, light, fastaffordable package.Add in the very popular focal length range & you have a lens that is just right for many digital SLR camera owners. The early-in-its-lifecycle popularity this lens is enjoying substantiates this claim.

Like Canon"s EF-S Lenses, The Tamron 17-50 provides an image circle that is large enough for APS-C (1.5x/1.6x FOVCF) sized digital SLRs sensors.Being sized for a smaller-format sensor allows a smaller design to lớn be used.Measuring 2.9 x 3.2" (74 x 82mm)(d x l) và weighing 15.2 oz (430g), the Tamron 17-50 is an ideal size for these smaller digital SLR bodies. It balances & handles very nicely.

Build unique is not rugged, but it is solid - very adequate I would say.The included hood is similarly built. The rubber on the zoom ring is grippy, soft & deeply ribbed. The zoom và focus rings turn smoothly.Tamron"s rear lens cap only attaches at one position - a bit of a pain since I"m used to Canon"s 3 attachment positions.Tamron"s excellent center-pinch 67mm front cap more than makes up for this pain - I"ve considered putting these on my Canon lenses - and many of Sigma"s lenses desperately need them.

On khổng lồ more important issues ...The Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II Lens" AF is rather fast, but the high pitch buzz made by the focus motor is deceptive - making the lens sound slower.I found AF accuracy lớn be quite good with relatively few missed shots (that were not my fault at least). This is an internal-focusing lens - It does not change length during focusing và the front element does not rotate.FTM (Full Time Manual) focusing is not supported.Since the manual focus ring is rather small và in front of the larger focus ring, I did not find the focus ring turning during autofocusing to be much of a problem. It does turn though. The Tamron 17-50"s minimum focus distance is 10.6" (0.27m) and provides a respectable .22x magnification factor. Both the zoom và focus rings rotate the opposite direction of Canon"s lens rings.A zoom lock switch is provided.

Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Lens

The same lenses are shown below in their fully extended states with their lens hoods in place.

The optical chất lượng of the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II Lens is excellent (especially for the price).I find my images sharp even when wide mở cửa at f/2.8 at all focal lengths - I vì not hesitate khổng lồ use this lens at f/2.8.Narrowing the aperture 1 stop or so yields slightly sharper image centers & noticeably better corners as the corners are somewhat soft wide open.

If the subject or background is an evenly-shaded solid color, you might notice slight vignetting when the lens is at f/2.8 at the wider focal lengths.Otherwise, vignetting will not be noticeable. Some CA (Chromatic Aberration) can be seen in real life shots, but nothing I would consider objectionable.Flare is very well controlled. Some barrel distortion is visible at the 17mm end. Pincushion distortion becomes visible at 24mm & more noticeable at 35mm before lessening khổng lồ the 50mm end.Colors seem fine - neutral. The 7-blade aperture produces pleasant out-of-focus highlights.

*

Of course, the first thing I wanted to vị with this lens is lớn compare it with the
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens and
Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Lens -Both shown along with the Tamron in the above và below pictures.

*

First, the Canon 17-55 IS.This is my at-the-time-of-this-writing always-mounted lens for my
Canon 30D.The obvious difference between these lenses is form size - as shown in the picture. The Canon is .4" (9.5mm) wider & 1.2"(28.6mm) longer. The weight is noticeably different as well - The Canon weighs 7.6 oz (215g) more than the Tamron.

The Canon và Tamron are similarly sharp in the center at all focal lengths. At mid zoom range, the Canon begins showing better edge performance - becoming much better at 50mm.Keep in mind that the Canon did not perform well on the ISO 12233 chart test -It doesn"t seem to lượt thích closer focus distances.

The Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II Lens shows less vignetting than the Canon. The Tamron is more flare-resistant.This Tamron lens" 17mm is wider than this Canon lens" 17mm.Of course, the Canon has 5mm over the Tamron on the long end.

The Canon"s biggest advantage is the 3-stop image stabilizer that the Tamron 17-50 lacks. If your subject is not moving (or you are), this is a really nice feature. The Canon also features fast, silent USM (Ultrasonic Motor) focusing with FTM focusing.

Perhaps the biggest difference between these two lenses is the price. Each individual must determine if the Canon"s advantages are enough lớn justify the very large price differential.

The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Lens is very, very similar khổng lồ the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II Lens. These lenses are more similar than different. They are very similarly sized and shaped. They function very similarly.

The differences?
The Sigma is less resistant to lớn flare. The Sigma shows more CA.The Tamron is noticeably wider (17mm vs. 18mm - and even wider than the Canon with the same 17mm designation). The Tamron focuses faster, the Sigma focuses more quietly. The Tamron focuses much more accurately - My keeper rate is far higher with the Tamron. My Sigma has a weak left side -For sharpness, the Tamron beats the Sigma easily on the left side, but the Sigma is slightly better on the right. The Sigma rings rotate the Canon direction, the Tamron rings rotate the opposite direction. The Sigma is less expensive (but not by much). The Sigma"s requires its lens hood to be removed to lớn install/remove the lens cap - this is a pain -Plan to lớn buy the Tamron cap if you purchase the Sigma lens.

My pick?
I"d go with the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II Lens over the Sigma.

Moving on ...Tamron does not provide a pouch/case with this lens.Consider a Lowepro Lens Case 1W as a nice solution to this omission.

The Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II Lens is available in Canon (reviewed), Nikon & Minolta mounts. My standard disclaimer: You should be aware that there are potential issues with third buổi tiệc ngọt lenses.Since Tamron reverse engineers (vs. Licenses) manufacturer AF routines, there is always the possibility that a new body might not support an older third party lens. There are examples of this happening in the past.Sometimes a lens can be rechipped khổng lồ be made compatible, sometimes not.Second, there is the risk of a problem that results in the lens and body manufacturers pointing blame at each other. However, Tamron"s 6-year warranty is far superior to lớn Canon"s standard 1 year warranty.

Ideal Uses: Perfect for use on amateur digital (Nikon DX và Canon 1.6x) cameras as a general-purpose medium zoom. Unlike many non-Nikon lenses lượt thích Tokina & other Tamrons, this particular Tamron should works great on Nikon"s cheapest D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100 and D5000.

Not for: 35mm, full-frame or FX cameras. Not for grab-shots with VC turned on.

I personally buy from Adorama, Amazon, Ritz, B&H, Calumet and J&R. I can"t vouch for ads below.

This $600 Tamron has surprisingly good optics, but problems with its VC (VR or IS) và AF systems get in the way of good pictures.

I prefer my $200 Nikon 35mm f/1.8 DX, which is sharper, faster, smaller, lighter, focuses faster, easier & quieter, và is much less expensive. I"m not a fan hâm mộ of midrange zooms, but I must be the only one on earth who isn"t.

If you"re considering this mostly plastic lens, go for it. It works reasonably well — with one big catch:

This Tamron"s VR/IS/VC system works only if you have the time lớn wait a moment before you snap each and every photo. There is a huge flaw if you make a photo before waiting a second for it lớn settle down. If you snap a photo without waiting for the VC/VR/IS system to lớn settle, it will blur your image worse than if you had no VC, VR or IS! This is because this Tamron"s VC system jumps as it locks & unlocks, so if you don"t wait a moment with your finger half on the shutter for it to settle, it will blur your photo in the process of settling! Nikon"s VR và Canon"s IS systems don"t have this problem. This blurred a lot of shots for me before I figured this out. Therefore, this is a horrible lens for news, sport, kích hoạt and people shots unless you turn off the VR/IS/VC system. If you don"t, & if you shoot at a moment"s notice, the VC system will blur many of your shots!

This Tamron"s other drawback is its primitive (noisy) internal autofocus motor, and that it uses a primitive AF system that requires you move a switch lớn get from tự động hóa to manual focus. You can"t just grab the focus ring at any time, as you can bởi vì with the professional Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 DX và Canon"s 17-55mm f/2.8 IS.

Compatibility intro top

Warning: this lens is made completely without permission from Nikon or Canon. While it probably will work with your camera, there"s no telling that there won"t be some weird incompatibility, and there is always the possibility of incompatibility with future cameras you might buy two years from today. Canon và Nikon lenses don"t have this potential for problems.

When I say "ought to" below, I mean just that. All because this lens ought khổng lồ work, doesn"t mean that it will. I"ve only tried it on a Nikon D7000, on which it works swell.

Nikon

Everything should work perfectly on every DX digital Nikon, even on Nikon"s cheapest digitals lượt thích the D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100 and D5000.

See Nikon Lens Compatibility for details with your camera. Read down the "AF-S, AF-I," "G" and "VR" columns for this lens. You"ll get the least of all the features displayed in all columns, since "G" (gelding) is a deliberate handicap which removes features.

Canon

Everything ought to lớn work swell with every Canon EOS 1.6x digital camera. That works with EF-S lenses. This lens seems as if it ought lớn work with very old 1.6x cameras that aren"t EF-S compatible, but I didn"t try any myself.

Overall performance top

The Tamron 17-50mm works fine, but only it you remember to lớn let the VC system stabilize before shooting. This is not a lens for grab shots with the VC system.

Autofocus performance top

AF Noise

This Tamron, at least in Nikon mount, uses a dinky electric motor to lớn move the focus ring. It sounds like a toy.

This is how Canon did it — back in 1987.

AF Speed

AF tốc độ is fast enough in Nikon mount.

The focus ring moves during autofocus, so keep your fingers off the focus ring during autofocus!

AF Accuracy

AF seems fine at f/2.8 at all focal lengths on my Nikon D7000.

Manual Focus

Manual focus is great; but you vì chưng have lớn move a switch.

Unlike the Nikon và Canon, you may not touch the focus ring until after you"ve moved the switch on the lens khổng lồ MF. If you move the ring while in AF, you"ll be working against the motor built into the lens.

What Moves

Focus is internal, so nothing moves externally except the focus ring, which moves even during autofocus.

Bokeh performance top

Bokeh, the character of out of focus backgrounds, not simply how far out of focus they are, is crummy at 50mm. At 50mm, backgrounds are bothersome at all apertures.

I didn"t try at shorter settings; at shorter settings, depth-of-field is much larger so backgrounds are rarely out of focus to lớn worry about bokeh.

Here are crops from the center of 100% DX 16MP (Nikon D7000) images, focused on a reference phase lattice (the đen sides) at 3 meters (10 feet) with synthetic reference vegetation at 15 meters (50 fee). Printed full-image at this size, these would be about 50 x 33" (130 x 85 cm) prints, at least as seen on most 100 DPI computer monitors:

Caps performance top

The Tamron front cap is merely OK, although I"d leave it in the box and replace it with a good Nikon cap since the newest Nikon caps are much sturdier & easier khổng lồ get on and off than the Tamron caps.

The Tamron rear caps for Nikon stink because you must stop what you"re doing and align them carefully to lớn the dot on the lens before you twist them on. Forget it!

I"d use a real Nikon rear cap instead, since you can pop them on without having khổng lồ stop and look.

Cleanliness performance top

This Tamron arrived sealed from the factory with more than the usual amount of trắng dirt specks on the exterior.

You"d never notice this, but in my laboratory"s clean-room where I xuất hiện these và photograph them, I do.

Since I had to spend time spotting this out, I mention it here, because I hate wasting my time spotting-out dirt shipped by the manufacturer.

Distortion performance top

The Tamron 17-50mm has less distortion than expected.

Xem thêm: Hướng Dẫn Điều Trị Và Chăm Sóc Da Mụn Tuổi Dậy Thì Chuẩn Khoa Học

It has barrel distortion at 17mm, & not much anywhere else.

This can be corrected for critical use by plugging these figures into Photoshop"s lens distortion filter. These aren"t facts or specifications, they are the results of my research that requires hours of photography và calculations on the resulting data.
